Times when you might need emergency dental care

Dental injury caused by impact to the mouth
The most obvious reason you might need an urgent trip to the dental clinic is an injury caused by something hitting your mouth or hitting your mouth during a fall. This can include teeth being chipped or broken, made loose or even being knocked out. These type of injuries should be treated right away, before the situation gets worse or becomes irreparable. It is important to get treated quickly because even half an hour can mean the difference between saving your tooth or having to get a replacement.
Toothache
Toothaches can be caused by a variety of reasons – a broken tooth, a new cavity under an old filling, or damage from grinding or clenching. Severe toothache can indicate a more serious problem, especially if you can’t even eat or drink without experiencing pain. If this is the case, it’s best to visit a dentist and get emergency toothache relief right away to reduce the pain and stop the problem getting worse.
Sore and swollen gums
This is usually caused by an infection from plaque and gum disease, or a reaction to food getting stuck in between the teeth. This is why flossing is such an important part of daily dental care. You can try to gently floss the affected area and rinse with warm salt water to at least help the situation. But, if the pain is constant and your gums bleed even at the slightest touch, you should see an emergency dentist right away.
Lost crown
If you lose your crown, simple things like eating toast may cause pain. While it’s not a life-threatening situation, a lost crown can interfere with your daily eating and drinking, so it’s best to get treatment right away. Remember to bring your crown with you when you attend your appointment.

Key steps to saving your teeth after an accident

If your tooth is knocked out or broken it is important to try and save the tooth to help with reconstruction work.
If your tooth is knocked out
  1. Hold your tooth only by the crown being careful not to touch the roots.
  2. Lightly rinse your tooth but don’t brush or clean it roughly.
  3. Try to put your tooth back in its socket, but be careful to not swallow it.
  4. If you can’t put the tooth back in the socket then place it in a small container filled with whole milk or saliva.
If you have broken your tooth
  1. Find and save all the pieces of the broken tooth.
  2. Rinse your mouth out with warm water.
  3. Decrease the swelling by keeping a cold icepack on your cheek or lips in the place where your tooth was broken.
  4. Take over the counter pain medication for temporary pain relief.
Call us as soon as you can and get immediate treatment. The sooner you get emergency dental treatment, the higher your chances of saving your tooth.
