Albany Dental Group offers dentistry under IV sedation for nervous patients

Intravenous Sedation (IV sedation) is a modern type of sedation which can be used during dental procedures. It is especially helpful for people who have an acute fear of going to the dentist.
Before the procedure starts a small amount of sedative is injected into a vein in your arm. This makes you relaxed and drowsy however you remain conscious and breathing on your own and will be able to follow instructions from your dentist. Local anaesthetics will still be given at the site of the procedure but you will not feel these and due to the amnesia caused by the sedative you will likely not remember much about the procedure.
After the treatment you will need to rest for a short time before going home. You will feel alert after treatment but it can take a few hours for the sedative to completely leave your body.

IV sedation is suitable for most patients, however, if you are not in good health or are taking any medicines or tablets, you should tell your dentist so that the sedation can be modified to suit your needs. Before the appointment you will be asked to fill in a medical history form. Please do this thoroughly and if you do not understand any question, discuss it with the dentist or dental assistant.

Important things to do before and after your appointment

Please arrange for someone to bring you to and take you home from your appointment.
In you own interests and that of other patients, you should not attend your IV appointment if you develop any cold, influenza, sore throat or other infection. In this case please phone us to reschedule your appointment.
You also need to tell us if you are taking any medication especially sleeping drugs, tranquillisers or cortisone preparations.
Pre-operation
  • NO FOOD for 4 hours and NO FLUIDS 1 hour prior to appointment time.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing.
  • Contact lenses are best removed before your appointment
  • Visit the toilet prior to your appointment
Post operation
  • Go home and rest under supervision.
  • DO NOT drive any vehicle or sign documents until the following day.
  • DO NOT consume alcohol until the following day.
  • Post-operative dental treatment instructions will be given to your escort.
