Wisdom teeth removal may be necessary to avoid further complications

Wisdom teeth, also commonly known as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth. They appear in early adulthood, usually between the ages of 17 and 25-years-old. They are also the furthest back teeth in your mouth and commonly hidden underneath gum tissue. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but it’s common to be missing one or two and in some cases all four.

For some people, removal of impacted wisdom teeth becomes necessary when they start to cause considerable pain and problems. When you start to experience discomfort from a painful wisdom tooth, extraction is very often the best course of action.
At Albany Dental Group we have experienced dentists with extensive hospital experience working on complex extractions. This means we are able to tackle more difficult extractions without having to refer to an oral surgeon which makes the procedure more affordable for you.

Frequently asked questions about wisdom teeth removal

There are many reasons why wisdom teeth may need to be extracted but one of the most common reasons is when the wisdom tooth is impacted. A wisdom tooth becomes impacted when they cannot fully erupt into the mouth because of blockage from the other teeth, jaw or gums. These impactions can cause discomfort as well as other issues like gum and tooth infections. An extraction may also be required if a wisdom tooth has decay or infection.

During wisdom tooth removal we will use local anaesthetic to numb the area. At any time during the wisdom removal you can tell us to stop if you are uncomfortable or need a break and we can also top up the anaesthetic if required. We also offer IV sedation for nervous patients or possibly uncomfortable procedures such as removing multiple teeth.

Your mouth will be numb for up to 6 hours and you will likely not feel anything during this time. After the anaesthetic wears off you may feel tender or sore and you may want to take pain relief medication. The recovery time depends on the type of wisdom tooth removal you required. You are able to return to work or school the next day but may require pain relief. Most cases take about a week to recover fully but there can be complications that delay this.

A dry socket is a common complication after a wisdom tooth extraction. It happens when the clot has not formed properly or come out of the socket and usually occurs two or three days after the extraction. Dry socket can be quite uncomfortable but it is very easy to remedy and requires only a short follow-up appointment.

At the initial examination of your wisdom teeth we will take a panoramic Xray which shows us your entire jaw. From this Xray we can determine what method of wisdom tooth removal is suitable for you. Our dentists are experienced in both surgical and simple wisdom tooth removal. The difference between a simple and surgical wisdom extraction depends on whether we require the use of drilling tools and expert techniques. Your dentist will discuss with you if a surgical wisdom extraction is necessary. The panoramic Xray also shows us where the wisdom tooth is located in relation to the nerve that runs along your lower jaw, if there is a risk of nerve damage your dentist may instruct you to visit an oral surgeon.

We are unable to determine the cost of your wisdom tooth extraction without an Xray. We need this to assess whether it is a simple or surgical extraction which vary in cost. If sedation is required there will be an additional cost. We offer second opinions free of charge. All you need to do is send us a copy of the Xray showing the wisdom teeth in question and we can give you a quote.
