Smile with confidence with affordable teeth whitening that can be done in-house at our Albany or Rosedale clinic or at home

Teeth whitening is a popular dental procedure and an affordable choice to brighten your smile. Albany Dental Group offers teeth whitening at our clinics at Albany Mega Centre Dental and Rosedale Dental and also a take-home option.
Before starting any treatment your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to ensure your oral health is of a good standard. You may need to undergo other dental procedures before starting the whitening process. Your dentist will also advise you on the best whitening option.

At Albany Dental Group, we think that every patient deserves to have a smile they can be proud of.

In-house teeth whitening at our dental clinics

Getting your teeth whitened at the clinic is the fastest way to a brighter smile.
The process starts with an initial consultation to ensure your teeth are fit for whitening. Then an appointment will be booked for whitening.
At this appointment your dentist will apply a protective gel to your lips and gums, followed by the application of the whitening gel to the teeth. The gel, which contains Hydrogen Peroxide, is then activated by a special LED light. The resulting photochemical reaction gently penetrates the tooth to lift deep stains and dis-colourations.
This process varies in length, depending on the depth of the stain and the desired level of whiteness.
It can be a little uncomfortable having the mouth open for such a long time, but many patients find listening to music or watching a movie helps to distract them.
The appointment usually lasts around two hours. Only one treatment is usually needed, however, deep stains may require additional treatment.

Whitening your teeth at home

It is also possible to use take-home whitening kits and complete the process yourself, but this does take longer.
The process starts with an initial consultation with one of our dentists where we will determine if your teeth are suitable for whitening and, if so, which whitening gel will be best. We'll also take impressions of your teeth to create your custom-made trays.
Your take-home kit contains two new custom-made trays (one for the top teeth and one for the bottom), syringes of whitening gel and easy-to-follow instructions.
Once home, apply a small drop of gel inside each tooth impression in the two trays and place them on your teeth. Then wait a few hours while the whitening gel does its job. After your whitening session, remove and rinse the trays, and gently brush your teeth. Repeat this process over the next week or two until you achieve the level of whitening you desire.
The snug fit of your custom-made tray and the dentist-quality whitening gel provides you with an amazing result - much better than off-the-shelf kits from supermarkets.

Key information about teeth whitening

Key information about teeth whitening

Genetics play a big role in the natural colour of your teeth and everyone’s natural colour is different. No whitening product can change the genetic makeup that defines your tooth colour. However, we guarantee that when our products are used properly, they will remove all the stains that have built up over the years and restore your teeth to their optimal whiteness. The average person will remove all stains within around two in-house treatments or 7-14 take-home treatments. How long the whitening treatment lasts depends on many factors, including the lifestyle and habits that resulted in the stained teeth in the first place.

Getting your teeth whitened at one of our clinics means you’ll have healthcare professionals with years of training and experience in oral health working on your teeth. Dentists are able to use a strong percentage of Hydrogen Peroxide (7-12%) meaning your whitening results can be achieved quicker and more cost-effectively. Your dentist will also check your overall oral health at the same time to ensure there are no problems that could be affected by whitening or need treatment.

Gum irritation during in-house teeth whitening treatments is rare as the dentist applies a protective barrier to the gums before the whitening gel is applied directly onto your teeth. Gum irritation can also happen when using take-home whitening trays. We recommend taking a break from teeth whitening for a few days to allow your gums to recover if sensitivity occurs.

A very small percentage of people experience tooth sensitivity during treatment. This usually disappears shortly after finishing the treatment and can also be helped by decreasing the amount of time you use the take-home whitening system. Using sensitive tooth paste will help with sensitivity during the whitening process.

In general teeth whitening is safe for a wide range of people. However whitening is not suitable for:
  • patients under the age of 16 (we may allow the treatment with parental consent),
  • people who are pregnant or breastfeeding (this is precautionary as there have never been studies on potential risks for treatments done on those pregnant or breastfeeding)
  • people those with oral health conditions such as Gingivitis, Leaking fillings or cavities
We recommend coming in for a teeth whitening consultation to determine whether teeth whitening is right for you.

Natural teeth have pores which allow teeth whitening gel to be absorbed and remove stains. Artificial and cosmetic dental work such as crowns, caps, fillings or veneers are colour matched at the time they are placed and do not have pores. The colour of your cap, crown or veneer cannot be changed unless it is replaced. Teeth whitening will not whiten or damage artificial dental work including crowns, veneers, bridges, permanent retainers, bonding, or fillings.

We recommend that prior to getting veneers, caps, or crowns, clients whiten their teeth. This way, the restoration work will match your whitest possible natural teeth.

Key information about whitening your teeth at home

Albany Dental Group uses White Dental Beauty products which come in a variety of different percentage gels, formulated for the different levels of sensitivity. Your dentist will discuss at your initial consult which percentage is best for you. The percentage level will determine how long you are to leave the gel in per session and this will be given to you in written instructions when you receive your take-home kit. Only a small amount is required for each tooth in the custom-made tray and you will be shown how much to use. Each whitening syringe contains enough gel for 3-6 applications of both top and bottom teeth.

Yes, we have many customers with orthodontic retainers or other restorative work and creating/using home whitening trays is perfectly fine. The impression material will not stick to your retainer and the whitening process will not harm the materials or bonding. Just be sure you press your impressions deep enough to cover the retainer so that your custom-made trays to fit perfectly.

After your initial teeth whitening appointment and impressions have been done it takes up to five days to make your trays. Once the kit is ready we will contact you to let know. We recommend that you come in to pick up your trays so that we can check the fit and show you how to use them.

Each set of teeth whitening trays are custom made to fit your teeth perfectly. The trays are made from a thin, flexible material that is comfortable and virtually unnoticeable. You will still be able to speak easily. The trays will stay snug and will not fall out when you open or close your mouth.

Trays do not cover the second molars (your very back teeth). These teeth do not need to be whitened. A tray that goes back to the 2nd molars is likely to cause gum irritation and is more susceptible to falling out.

The key to avoiding gum irritation is to avoid the whitening gel from having prolonged contact with your gums. Make sure you are not putting too much gel into the tray as gel will ooze out and sit on the gums. Remove any excess gel that has spread onto your gums. You can also rub Vaseline on your gums prior to inserting your trays. The Vaseline will act as a barrier so that less whitening gel is able to come into contact with your gums.

Teeth whitening gel will remain effective for one year if stored at room temperature and two years if refrigerated.

Yes. White Dental Beauty teeth whitening gel syringes can be purchased by themselves in packs of four or eight syringes.
